Devils Tower

Devils Tower

The journey to Devils Tower is quite easy just down interstate 90 from Badlands.  It did take a few hours to get here and the visitor center was closed when I arrived at 6:45pm but there was a very nice ranger at the entrance to collect the entrance fee.  He also let me know that the campground was open with sites and if I wanted to pay with a credit card I had to pay him otherwise cash at the campground.  I did take a drive though the campground and it was very nice but I can’t stay as I have 8 hours of driving in front of me tomorrow and I want to get some of those done tonight.  Devils Tower was visible about 4.5 miles while driving on Wyoming 24 before getting to the park and it was very cool seeing it that far away.    Interesting fact is that those columns are all different.  Some of the columns have 4 sides, others 6 and some even 8 sides.

Tower Trail – The visitor center is at the base of Devils Tower and it has a trail that leads up to the tower just below the “boulders” and unless you have a permit to rock climb you can’t go higher than the “boulders.”  The trail is a loop and it is 1.3 miles with a paved trail and plenty of places to sit down if you are tired.  Along the trail you also get some pointers about the tower and the surrounding area.  The paved trail does have some elevation change but it is not anything to worry about preventing anyone from enjoying the trail.  There are many benches along the way for your viewing and resting pleasure.  An interesting thing that is here is the “Prayer bundles or prayer cloths” hanging from trees as you approach the tower.  Please do not disturb these items.
