Bar Harbor Whale Watching – August 10 – 12, 2025, August 23, 2025

I have been to Bar Harbor Maine once before when I went to Acadia National Park, I am going to the park as well, but did not do any whale watching.  Well this trip I did 2 days of whale watching then went on a lighthouse/puffin tour.  The two days whale watching was awesome.  I got to see some humpback whales, and some fin whales (second largest whale).  The best part was seeing a whale breach with its entire body, no photos!  The breach happened when we were coming in from a day on the water and all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye I spotted  the whale in the air then the largest splash I could have imagined.  The guide on the boat was star struck from seeing this large breach and it took her a minute to compose herself and continue.  The whale that breached was one that was identified and the name is “Kracken” and we went on to watch “Kracken” for a few minutes.  Over the course of two days whale watching I got to see three fin whales, five humpback whales, and more than twenty dolphins.  We also saw the trash that is in the ocean like plastic water and bleach bottles.  The most interesting item was a freezer floating on the top of the ocean.  It was closed so was not sinking but oh boy was that large and brings to mind that we need to ensure we depose of our trash properly.

The whale watching company was good and I did enjoy their staff.  The boats, I was on two, were new jet style boats.  The boats were very comfortable and had plenty of viewing areas to see the wildlife.  I was able to speak to a few passengers on my tours.  Day one’s tour, I spoke with Liz who was on the boat with her parents and her younger brother.  Liz is from MD so we were chatting about MD but also she mentioned she is working at a Kosher Chinese Restaurant in MD, that was a first for me.  She is also going to college and putting herself through college.  Liz mentioned she has been to more countries than states.  I asked why and she told me her parents were from France, and Puerto Rico.  A very confident young lady, and she will be successful in my opinion.  Day two’s tour I met Jessica who was trying to look at whales with a two year old sleeping while she was holding him.  Jessica is from Louisiana but now lives in Colorado.  Her in-laws are from MD and their daughter went to Towson!, YEA.  Jessica’s husband went to the UofM, BOOO.
